We always start our Monday English class with some time to retell about our weekend. Some of our highlights this weekend were going swimming, trying new foods, trampolining and hanging out with friends. When sharing we practice talking about where we went, what we did, and who we did it with. By practicing sharing about our weekends, it will help us to be ready to write a personal retell.
In 1D we have been learning a lot about our numbers. We have talked about how to represent the numbers in pictures, numbers and words, and we have been practicing these skills with our Math Makes Sense book, as well as doing Math Centres.
Centres are something that we do a lot in Grade one, usually in Math or English. The difference between centres in Grade 1 and PG is that our centres are subject focused, so all students would be working on Math Centres at the same time, as opposed to a mix of subjects. This week we had 4 different centres. In small groups of 5-6 students, we rotated through them so that every student had a chance to try each centre with their group. The most popular centre this week was building numbers using pattern blocks! We read "How to fill a Bucket for Kids" today. It is a story about a little boy who learned how to be kind to his classmates and people in his life. In the story it talks about how everyone has an invisible Bucket above the head. Your bucket fills up when people are kid, and when people dip in your bucket (are mean) your Bucket becomes empty. We started reading Bucket filling A-Z and came up with ways we could be Bucket fillers at school, at home and in the community.
Yesterday, we had a visitor in 1D. Every Thursday, Mr.MacLeod will be visiting our class to read a story to the whole class and work in small groups with the ESL students. Today in English we did some buddy reading. We made sure that we picked books that had a purpose, were interesting, we could understand and that we knew most of the words.
